Vespa 288 Classic Racer
The making of
Beschreibung
Custom Vespa project based on a brand new PX body in wideframe "headlight down" style, inspired by our Superlow Series 50's Racer.
In addition to various individual technical solutions, we have here for the first time implanted a Vespa Smallframe engine into a Largeframe frame - we used a BFA 288ccm engine with a Scooter & Service exhaust specially made for this configuration.
The advantages of this technically sophisticated design lie primarily in the narrower width of the smallframe engine and the ability to significantly extend the wheelbase: Compared to a BFA 306cc largeframe engine, we have saved approximately 50mm of width on the right side and achieved a 30mm longer wheelbase – the 130mm wide tire runs without any offset. Besides the significantly reduced right-side bias and the lower overall weight of the BFA 288 engine, this configuration results in considerably improved straight-line stability at higher speeds and overall enhanced handling. The 288cc engine, with a 30mm carburetor and the wide-band exhaust system with sound insulation, runs very smoothly and quietly on the road. With its early torque delivery and a maximum output of 42hp at the rear wheel, the installed BFA 5-speed gearbox is more of a technical gimmick than a necessary component of the engine setup.
